If you’ve been following along with Corning, you know we’ve walked through each of the building blocks of a fiber network: cables, connectors, and hardware. And we also know this content can seem, well, dry. Let’s face it: fiber isn’t the most riveting topic to cover, and it can be extremely yawn worthy.
So with that being said, without resharing (and oversharing in some instances) about all flavors and functions that define a fiber network, let’s break it down with a handful of key questions to ask yourself when trying to decide exactly which product fits your needs best.
When selecting cable type, ask yourself:
- What fiber type do you need? Single-mode or multimode?
- Are you placing the cable indoors, outdoors, or both?
- What fiber count do you need?
- If indoor or indoor/outdoor, do you need plenum or riser?
- Do you need armored or non-armored?
When selecting connector type, ask yourself:
- Are you fusion splicing or using field-installable connectors?
- Do you need SC, ST compatible or LC connectors?
- Do you need single-mode or multimode?
- If field installable, would you like to use UniCam connectors or anaerobic connectors?
- If fusion splice, would you like to use pigtailed cassettes or splice-on connectors?
When selecting hardware type, ask yourself:
- Will the hardware go in a rack or on a wall?
- Will it go outdoors or indoors?
- Do you want to populate with pigtailed cassettes or adapter panels?
- What fiber type do you need? Single-mode or multimode?
- What fiber count are you housing?
