For field mounting connectors for FTTx indoor and outdoor cables, look no further than 3M's innovative Crimplok Connectors. Traditionally fusion splicing has been the preferred method of field connectivity, but 3M's new connectors are changing the game. The cost of a fusion splicing machine can be extraordinary, sometimes reaching into the tens of thousands – without taking into consideration the cost of maintenance, batteries, downtime and the amount of time it actually takes to setup and use.
Crimplok technology utilizes a mechanical connection instead of fusing, which can make savings of well over 50% on equipment and labor a reality. The SC/UPC and SC/APC Crimplok connectors only require a field tool to polish the fiber, with no splice or gel. A simple turn of the handle will lock the fiber lengths together. Installation time for home drops and enterprise applications is much faster than fusion splicing, usually 2-3 minutes for the 3M No Polish Connectors and around 5 minutes for the 3M Crimplok + connector. There is no need to fear an inferior connection either. A fiber connection with 3M mechanical connectors is comparable to that of fusion splicing: a median insertion loss of less than .3 dB.
