When you're choosing which fiber cables to include in your building or on your campus, you have a lot to consider. You may be thinking about the price of the cables, or their efficiency and ability to meet your requirements... but do you consider how easy (or difficult) they can be to install?
Installing fiber cables in Enterprise settings can bring some challenges for designers, contractors, and owners. The backbone infrastructure in the Enterprise is typically comprised of two basic operating environments, outside plant and inside building. Traditional cabling methods require two different cable constructions to meet the unique needs of each of these conditions. For example, you may need loose tube cables that are rated for the outdoor environment for outside plant purposes, and you may need tight buffer fire-rated cables for inside building purposes. That creates extra work in both the design, installation, and maintenance phases of your project.
There is actually a way to simplify Enterprise fiber installations! It comes in the form of the Plenum 900 µm tight-buffered indoor/outdoor cables from Berk-Tek, a Leviton company. These innovative cables are designed for installation in plenum or riser environments, as well as inter-building backbone connections. You can even use them to connect equipment rooms without the transition point you would usually need when using traditional outside plant cable. They're also a lot easier to install, since you don't have to determine and manage the installation process for multiple cables and consider transition points. If you need extra protection for challenging installations, they're also available with aluminum interlocking armor (Armor-Tek™). Since they have no transition points, and fewer cross-connect points, they also offer lower system loss.
When you look at the Plenum Indoor/Outdoor fiber cables from Berk-Tek and Leviton, it's easy to see all the benefits they offer over the traditional options for outside plant and inside building installations.
