Smart buildings can save energy, reduce costs and improve user experience, but they also require more bandwidth and power from your IP network. In last month's blog post with Berk-Tek, we introduced you to their uLAN™ Extender Series, which enables you to manage these demands on your network without risking network performance.
As a refresher, uLAN, or Utility LAN, is an ecosystem of devices that are not traditionally Ethernet-enabled, but are now being connected and powered by the IP network. Berk-Tek's uLAN Extender Series is a comprehensive line of solutions designed to connect and power these smart building devices at distances greater than the standards-defined 100 meters.
This is especially important, because uLAN applications like building automation and security often require devices to be located more than 100 meters from the switch. Think about parking lots, parking garages and large campuses - it's just not possible to ensure all devices are less than 100 meters from the switch. Berk-Tek's uLAN Extender Series makes it possible to place devices where you need them and ensure connectivity. Their product line offers high-performance solutions to connect and power any uLAN application, in any environment.
Berk-Tek's uLAN Extender Series includes three products - let's take a look at them here:
- EXT-100: this is a lower-cost alternative to extend PoE+ (30 Watts) and 100 Mbps to 385 meters
- OneReach™: this utilizes a copper/fiber cable to extend PoE+ (30 Watts) and 1 Gbps to a kilometer or more
- PowerGIG™-OAC: when local power is available, this managed switch can deliver PoE++ (up to 90 Watts) and 1 Gbps to 100 meters
